Description

A hearty and comforting casserole featuring savory ground beef patties baked in a rich, creamy mushroom gravy and topped with gooey cheddar cheese, perfect for a family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

2 lbs (900 g) ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large egg
½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
Optional: ½ teaspoon paprika for color
Optional: 1 tablespoon butter for richness

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks: In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until combined. Shape into 6 thick patties and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 3: Make the Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the patties in the dish.
Step 4: Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of each patty, and bake uncovered for another 10–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 5: Serve: Remove from oven and let rest for a few minutes. Sprinkle a little paprika or chopped parsley for color.

Notes

Serve warm with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or steamed vegetables for a hearty Amish-style comfort meal. For extra richness, whisk in 1 tablespoon of butter with the soup and milk. A sprinkle of fresh parsley adds a lovely pop of color.
