Description
A traditional Danish-style oval pastry featuring dozens of flaky layers, a warm spiced apple filling, and a sweet vanilla icing.
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 package (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
1 cup cold unsalted butter, divided
2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp heavy cream
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Instructions
Step 1: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm milk. Let stand for 10 minutes until foamy.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in 1/4 cup of the cold butter until crumbly. Stir in the yeast mixture to form a dough.
Step 3: Roll dough into a 12x8 inch rectangle. Slice the remaining 3/4 cup butter into thin pats and place over two-thirds of the dough. Fold the un-buttered third over the center, then fold the other buttered third over that.
Step 4: Wrap and chill for 30 minutes. Repeat the rolling and folding process twice more without adding more butter, chilling 30 minutes between each turn.
Step 5: Cook diced apples, brown sugar, and spices in a skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes until softened. Cool completely.
Step 6: Roll dough into a 6x30 inch strip. Place apple filling down the center. Pinch edges to seal and form into an oval on a parchment-lined pan.
Step 7: Bake at 375°F for 25-30 minutes until golden. Cool slightly.
Step 8: Whisk powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla. Drizzle over the warm kringle before serving.
Notes
Ensure the apple filling is completely cold before adding it to the dough to prevent the butter from melting prematurely.
