Description
Transform classic deli meats and cheese into a warm, gooey, and irresistible baked Italian sub sandwich.
Ingredients
4 sub rolls or Italian hoagie buns
8 slices provolone cheese
8 slices salami
8 slices pepperoni
4 slices deli ham (optional)
1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
1 large tomato, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, divided
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Slice the sub rolls lengthwise, but not all the way through, creating a hinge.
Step 3: Drizzle the inside of each sub roll with about 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil and 1/4 tablespoon of red wine vinegar.
Step 4: Layer 2 slices of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each roll. Then layer 2 slices of salami, 2 slices of pepperoni, and 1 slice of ham (if using) onto each sandwich.
Step 5: Distribute the thinly sliced red onion evenly over the meats.
Step 6: Place the assembled subs on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 7: Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly, and the rolls are golden brown and slightly crisp.
Step 8: Carefully remove the subs from the oven. Immediately add the shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes to each sub.
Step 9: Season with dried oregano, salt, and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
For extra flavor, lightly toast the cut sides of the rolls under the broiler for 1-2 minutes before adding fillings. You can also customize with other favorite deli meats or cheeses like Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella. A dash of hot sauce or banana peppers can add a nice kick!
