Description

Create thrilling erupting dinosaur eggs using baking soda and vinegar – a super fun and educational science experiment for kids!

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups baking soda
1/2 cup water
Food coloring (optional)
4-6 small plastic toy dinosaurs
1 cup white vinegar (for hatching)
Eye dropper, spray bottle, or small spoon (for hatching)

Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the baking soda and gradually add the water. Mix thoroughly. You're looking for a consistency similar to damp sand that can be molded. If it's too crumbly, add a tiny bit more water. If too wet, add a little more baking soda.
Step 2: If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture and knead until the color is evenly distributed. You can make multiple batches with different colors!
Step 3: Take a small amount of the baking soda mixture and press it flat in the palm of your hand. Place one toy dinosaur in the center.
Step 4: Carefully mold the baking soda mixture around the dinosaur, forming an egg shape. Make sure the dinosaur is completely enclosed and the egg is firm. Repeat for all your dinosaurs.
Step 5: Place the molded dinosaur eggs on a baking sheet or plate lined with parchment paper. Let them air dry for at least 24 hours, or until they are hard and solid. This step is crucial for good eruption!
Step 6: Once the eggs are completely dry, set up your excavation station. Place the dried dinosaur eggs in a shallow dish, baking pan, or sensory bin. Pour the vinegar into a separate bowl or cup.
Step 7: Provide your child with an eye dropper, spray bottle, or small spoon. Encourage them to drizzle or spray vinegar onto the baking soda eggs. Watch the magic happen as they fizz, bubble, and erupt!
Step 8: Continue adding vinegar until the baking soda has completely dissolved and the hidden dinosaur is revealed. Carefully rinse the dinosaur and the remaining baking soda solution.

Notes

For easier cleanup, perform this activity outdoors or in a large sensory bin. You can also vary the 'dinosaur' inside the eggs; small plastic animals or even coins work too!
