Description

A comforting Italian-American casserole featuring layers of ziti pasta, rich marinara sauce, creamy ricotta, and melted mozzarella cheese, perfect for family meals.

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound ziti pasta
2 cups ricotta cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
4 cups marinara sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain well and set aside.
Step 2: In a large saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Pour in the marinara sauce and Italian seasoning. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it gently cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 3: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese with 1/2 cup of the shredded mozzarella, 1/4 cup of the grated parmesan, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Step 4: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of the dish.
Step 5: Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce. Top with dollops of half of the ricotta mixture, then cover with another layer of marinara sauce. Sprinkle with 1 cup of the remaining shredded mozzarella.
Step 6: Repeat the layers: remaining ziti, remaining ricotta mixture, remaining marinara sauce, and the last cup of shredded mozzarella and remaining 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese.
Step 7: Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese is melted and golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
Step 8: Remove from oven and let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider browning 1 pound of Italian sausage or ground beef with the garlic before adding it to the marinara sauce. This will make it a hearty meat baked ziti.
