Description

This timeless classic green bean casserole combines tender green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy fried onions, perfect for any holiday feast or comforting family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup milk (whole milk works best for creaminess)
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp soy sauce (adds depth without overpowering)
1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup (I use Campbell’s for the classic flavor)
4 cups green beans (fresh, frozen, or canned; thawed if frozen)
1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions (French’s brand is traditional; reserve some for garnish on top)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare your green beans: if using fresh, blanch until tender-crisp; if frozen, thaw and drain well; if canned, rinse and drain well.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, ground black pepper, and soy sauce until smooth.
Step 3: Gently fold the prepared green beans into the soup mixture until they are evenly coated.
Step 4: Pour the mixture into a 1.5-quart casserole dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle two-thirds (about 1 cup) of the crispy fried onions over the top of the casserole.
Step 5: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and heated through.
Step 6: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions over the top. Return to the oven for another 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown and crisp.
Step 7: Let the casserole stand for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious classic green bean casserole!

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using whole milk or even half-and-half. You can also add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the sauce for extra aromatic depth. For an ahead-of-time prep, mix everything but the final crispy onions, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to baking time if baking from cold.
