Description

These Southern-style Homemade Biscuits are light, fluffy, and buttery with a golden top and tender crumb. Made with buttermilk and a few pantry staples, they’re perfect for breakfast or any comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (plus extra for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add cubed butter and cut it into the flour using a pastry cutter or fingertips until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Buttermilk: Pour in buttermilk and stir gently until a sticky dough forms—do not overmix.
  5. Shape Dough: Turn dough onto floured surface, knead gently a few times, and pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Cut Biscuits: Use a biscuit cutter or glass to cut out rounds and place them close together on the baking sheet.
  7. Brush & Bake: Brush tops with extra buttermilk and bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Serve: Let cool slightly and enjoy warm with butter, jam, or gravy.

Notes

Try adding cheese or herbs for a flavorful variation. Store in an airtight container for 2 days at room temp, or freeze unbaked for future baking. Reheat in oven for best texture.
