Description

A bold, crunchy, and addictive snack that combines the heartiness of sourdough pretzels with a fiery blend of spices. Perfect for parties, gifting, or everyday snacking.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb (16 oz) hard sourdough pretzels, broken into bite-sized pieces
1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
2 tablespoons cayenne pepper (adjust for heat)
1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (optional, as pretzels are already salted)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C) and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Step 2: In a very large mixing bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and onion powder until the spices are evenly distributed in the oil.
Step 3: Add the sourdough pretzel pieces to the bowl and toss thoroughly using a large spoon or spatula until every pretzel chunk is well-coated with the spicy oil mixture.
Step 4: Allow the pretzels to sit in the bowl for 10-15 minutes, tossing occasionally to ensure the oil is absorbed into the crevices of the pretzels.
Step 5: Spread the pretzels out in a single, even layer on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 6: Bake for 45 minutes, removing the tray every 15 minutes to toss the pretzels with a spatula for even toasting.
Step 7: Remove from the oven and let the pretzels cool completely on the baking sheet. They will become even crunchier as they cool down.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a dash of habanero powder. For a milder version, replace half the cayenne with smoked paprika.
