Description
A classic, rustic dessert featuring juicy blackberries topped with a sweet, golden, buttery crust.
Ingredients
6 cups fresh blackberries
1.5 cups granulated sugar, divided
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1.5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter.
Step 2: In a medium bowl, gently combine the blackberries, 1/2 cup of sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Transfer the mixture to the baking pan.
Step 3: In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining 1 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Step 4: Pour in the milk and melted butter, stirring until the batter is just mixed. It is okay if it is slightly lumpy.
Step 5: Drop the batter by spoonfuls over the berries and sprinkle with cinnamon and a little extra sugar.
Step 6: Bake for 45-55 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the berry juices are bubbling around the edges.
Step 7: Remove from the oven and let rest for 15-20 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
Using wild blackberries provides a more intense tart flavor compared to store-bought varieties.
