A strikingly spooky bread with a fiery red interior and a dramatic black 'brimstone' topping, perfect for Halloween celebrations.
Ingredients
1 box instant bread mix
1 cup warm water (105°F to 115°F)
Red food coloring, as desired
2 tbsp active dry yeast
2 tbsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups rice flour
Black food coloring or activated charcoal, as preferred
Additional water, as needed for coloring/consistency
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the red dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant bread mix with 1 cup warm water. Add red food coloring, a few drops at a time, until a vibrant red color is achieved. Mix and knead according to the bread mix package directions. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the black topping. In a separate bowl, combine the active dry yeast, granulated sugar, vegetable oil, and salt. Gradually add the rice flour and black food coloring (or activated charcoal). Add additional water, a teaspoon at a time, until a pliable, dark black dough or thick paste forms. Knead briefly on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
Step 3: Assemble the loaf. Punch down the risen red dough and gently shape it into a loaf. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the black topping dough thinly into a rectangle or irregular shapes. Drape or press the black topping onto the red loaf, creating a dramatic, charred effect. You can cut strips or create a patchwork design.
Step 4: Second rise. Place the assembled loaf into a greased loaf pan or onto a baking sheet. Cover lightly and let rise again in a warm place for another 20-30 minutes, or until noticeably puffy.
Step 5: Bake. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the Brimstone Bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown on the exposed red parts and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. If the topping browns too quickly, you can tent it loosely with foil.
Step 6: Cool and serve. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your spooky creation!

For an even deeper black color, ensure you use a high-quality black food gel. Activated charcoal is also a fantastic natural option, just be mindful of the quantity as it can have a strong taste if overused. Experiment with different shapes for the black topping to enhance the 'brimstone' effect!
