Description
A rustic, open-faced tart featuring caramelized apples and crunchy pecans nestled in a buttery, flaky crust.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
1/4 cup ice water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for dough)
4 large apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), sliced thin
1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 egg (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon turbinado sugar (for topping)
Instructions
Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and granulated sugar. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water one tablespoon at a time until the dough just comes together.
Step 2: Form the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Step 3: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Step 4: On a floured piece of parchment paper, roll out the dough into a 12-inch circle. It doesn't need to be perfect!
Step 5: Mound the apple mixture in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the apples.
Step 6: Fold the edges of the dough over the fruit, pleating as you go. Brush the edges with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
Step 7: Transfer the parchment to a baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Step 8: Let the galette cool for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Ensure the butter is very cold for the flakiest crust. You can substitute walnuts if pecans are unavailable.
