A warm, comforting dessert made effortless in your slow cooker, featuring tender apples, gooey caramel, and a crispy oat topping.
Ingredients
6-8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup store-bought caramel sauce (or homemade)
For the Topping:
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
Instructions
Step 1: Lightly grease the inside of a 6-quart (or larger) slow cooker with butter or cooking spray.
Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour (or cornstarch), cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
Step 3: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared slow cooker. Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the apples.
Step 4: In a separate medium bowl, prepare the topping. Combine the oats, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender, your fingers, or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 5: Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple and caramel mixture in the slow cooker.
Step 6: Cover and cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or on LOW for 4-5 hours, or until the apples are tender. For a crispier topping, remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of cooking, or transfer the topping to a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown before serving.
Notes
For extra richness, add a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat topping. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days and reheated gently.
