Description
Tender apple slices slow-cooked in a buttery, sweet syrup with cinnamon and nutmeg, recreating the beloved Cracker Barrel fried apples at home.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup apple juice or cider
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/2-inch wedges.
- In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, lemon juice, and apple juice or cider.
- Place sliced apples into the slow cooker and pour syrup mixture over them; gently toss to coat without breaking the slices.
- Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours until apples are tender but still hold their shape.
- Stir gently halfway through cooking to ensure even coating and prevent apples from becoming too soft.
- After cooking, remove lid and let apples sit for 10 to 15 minutes to allow sauce to thicken.
Notes
Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Golden Delicious for best texture. Lemon juice prevents browning and balances sweetness. Adjust sugar to taste but do not omit for proper syrup consistency.
