Cozy Cracker Barrel fried apples simmering in a slow cooker

Slow Cooker Cracker Barrel Fried Apples

  • Total Time: 3 hours 15 minutes - 4 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Tender, cinnamon-spiced apples cooked to perfection in a slow cooker, recreating the beloved Cracker Barrel classic at home.

Ingredients

Scale

6 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/2-inch thick
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup apple juice or cider

Instructions

Step 1: Peel, core, and slice the apples into approximately 1/2-inch thick wedges. Ensure the slices are uniform for even cooking.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, cornstarch, fresh lemon juice, and apple juice or cider until well combined and the cornstarch is dissolved.
Step 3: Place the sliced apples into the slow cooker. Pour the syrup mixture evenly over the apples. Gently toss the apples to ensure all slices are thoroughly coated with the spice and sugar mixture.
Step 4: Cover the slow cooker and cook on the LOW setting for 3 to 4 hours, or until the apples are tender but still retain their shape.
Step 5: Approximately halfway through the cooking time (around 1.5 to 2 hours), gently stir the apples to ensure even cooking and sauce distribution.
Step 6: Once the apples are cooked to your desired tenderness, turn off the slow cooker and remove the lid. Let the apples sit uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken into a glossy syrup.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can use apple cider instead of apple juice. Adjust cooking time based on your slow cooker and desired apple tenderness. Avoid overcooking to prevent mushy apples.
