Ingredients
4 large onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon sugar
8 cups beef broth
1/4 cup sherry
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
4 slices of bread or crispy croutons
1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
Instructions
Step 1: In a slow cooker, combine the thinly sliced onions, butter, and sugar. Cook on low for 8 hours or until the onions are deeply caramelized.
Step 2: Add beef broth, sherry, fresh thyme, salt, and pepper to the slow cooker. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
Step 3: Cook on low for an additional 4 hours to allow the flavors to fully meld together and deepen.
Step 4: Preheat your broiler. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl generously with a slice of bread or crispy croutons, then sprinkle with shredded Gruyère cheese.
Step 5: Carefully place the bowls under the preheated broiler for a few minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and beautifully golden brown.
Step 6: Serve immediately and savor the warm, comforting flavors of your homemade Slow Cooker French Onion Soup!
Notes
For the best flavor, use a good quality beef broth. A dry sherry is recommended, but you can substitute with more beef broth if you prefer to omit alcohol.
