Description
An incredibly easy and adorable recipe for chocolate or vanilla cupcakes decorated to look like spooky mummies, perfect for any Halloween celebration.
Ingredients
1 box chocolate or vanilla cake mix (plus ingredients as required on box: typically eggs, oil, water)
OR ingredients for 12 cupcakes from your favorite scratch recipe
2 cups vanilla buttercream frosting
White food coloring (optional, for brighter white)
24 candy eyeballs (2 per cupcake)
1 piping bag fitted with a flat or ribbon tip (e.g., Wilton #47 or #44)
Optional: chocolate chips or ganache for extra mummy detail
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your chosen cupcake batter (from a mix or scratch recipe) according to package or recipe directions.
Step 2: Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners. Fill each liner about two-thirds full with batter.
Step 3: Bake according to the recipe or package instructions until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 4: While cupcakes cool, prepare your vanilla buttercream frosting. If desired, add a few drops of white food coloring to achieve a brighter white, mixing until evenly combined.
Step 5: Fit a piping bag with a flat or ribbon tip (such as Wilton #47 or #44) and fill it with the prepared buttercream frosting.
Step 6: Once the cupcakes are completely cool, pipe horizontal strips of frosting across the top of each cupcake, overlapping slightly to create a 'bandage' effect. Leave a small, unfilled gap in the middle-top portion of the cupcake for the eyes.
Step 7: Gently press two candy eyeballs into the small gap on each cupcake, positioning them to look like the mummy's eyes peeking through the bandages.
Step 8: For an extra touch, use a fine-tipped piping bag with melted chocolate or ganache to draw small stitches or scars on the frosting 'bandages' if desired. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.
Notes
For best results, ensure cupcakes are completely cool before frosting. If your frosting is too stiff, add a tiny bit of milk or cream until it's pipeable. If too soft, add more powdered sugar. Practice piping on a piece of parchment paper first!
