3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup unsulphured molasses
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
1 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp light brown sugar
Instructions
Step 1: Proof the yeast by mixing warm water, brown sugar, and yeast in a small bowl until foamy.
Step 2: Combine all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Step 3: Add the yeast mixture, molasses, and softened butter to the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
Step 4: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 5: Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 90 minutes or until doubled in size.
Step 6: Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9x5 loaf pan for a second 45-minute rise.
Step 7: Bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
Step 8: Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing your Sweet Molasses Brown Bread.
Notes
Ensure yeast is active; substitute butter with coconut oil for a dairy-free version.
