Description

Discover the ultimate one-pot comfort dish with our crock pot Swedish meatballs guide. This recipe delivers tender meatballs simmered in a rich cream sauce, perfect for busy weeknights or leisurely weekend dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb ground chicken
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground chicken, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, and finely chopped onion. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form mixture into 1 to 1½ inch meatballs and place on a parchment-lined tray.
  3. Optional: Brown meatballs in a preheated oven-safe skillet, 2 minutes per side, then transfer to crock pot.
  4. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to create a roux and cook 1–2 minutes.
  5. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly until thickened.
  6. Stir in heavy cream or sour cream and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Pour sauce over meatballs in crock pot, cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or high for 2–3 hours.
  8. Halfway through cooking, gently stir sauce to prevent sticking.
  9. Use a meat thermometer to ensure meatballs reach 160 °F.
  10. Serve over egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

For tender meatballs, avoid overmixing and chill formed meatballs before cooking. Adjust sauce thickness by modifying flour or broth. Try variations like adding Dijon mustard or mushrooms. Use a digital thermometer to confirm doneness.
