Ingredients
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
Step 2: In a small bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
Step 3: In a large mixer bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is creamy and light.
Step 4: Add the eggs to the butter mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition to ensure a smooth consistency.
Step 5: Gradually beat in the flour mixture on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
Step 6: Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped nuts by hand using a sturdy spatula.
Step 7: Drop the dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches of space between each.
Step 8: Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Let them stand for 2 minutes on the sheets before moving to wire racks to cool completely.
Notes
For softer cookies, bake for exactly 9 minutes. For crispier cookies, leave them in for the full 11 minutes. Chilling the dough overnight significantly improves flavor.
