Description
A comforting Italian-American casserole featuring ziti pasta, a savory meat sauce, creamy ricotta, and a melted mozzarella and Parmesan topping.
Ingredients
1 pound ziti pasta
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
1 can (15 ounces) ricotta cheese
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
Salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain, toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil, and set aside.
Step 2: In a large skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until browned and the onion is softened, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Step 3: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and Italian seasoning. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 4: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese and heavy cream. Mix well until smooth.
Step 5: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Step 6: Spread about 1/3 of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Step 7: Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce.
Step 8: Dollop half of the ricotta-cream mixture over the ziti, spreading gently.
Step 9: Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese over the ricotta layer.
Step 10: Repeat the layers: another 1/3 of the meat sauce, the remaining ziti, the rest of the ricotta-cream mixture, and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Step 11: Top with the last 1/3 of the meat sauce, ensuring the pasta is mostly covered.
Step 12: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 25 minutes.
Step 13: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Step 14: Let the baked ziti rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley, if desired.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, try browning a mix of Italian sausage and ground beef. Leftovers are fantastic and reheat well!
