Description
A spicy southern-inspired twist on the classic sloppy joe featuring ground chicken and a velvety homemade cheese sauce.
Ingredients
1 lb ground chicken
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small yellow onion, finely diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp Cajun seasoning
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
1/2 tsp garlic powder
4-6 brioche buns, toasted
Instructions
Step 1: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and brown the ground chicken, breaking it apart with a spoon until no longer pink.
Step 2: Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook for 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft.
Step 3: Stir in the minced garlic and Cajun seasoning, cooking for 1 minute until fragrant.
Step 4: Add the tomato paste, chicken broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
Step 5: In a separate saucepan, heat the heavy cream until simmering. Gradually whisk in the cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses until smooth.
Step 6: Stir in the garlic powder to the cheese sauce and remove from heat.
Step 7: Serve the Cajun chicken mixture on toasted buns and top generously with the creamy cheese sauce.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of hot sauce to the chicken mixture while simmering.
