Description

Unlock a world of flavor with this incredible homemade dragon sauce recipe! Perfectly balanced with sweet, savory, and spicy notes, this versatile sauce will become your go-to for stir-fries, marinades, dipping, and more. It’s easy to make and far surpasses any store-bought alternative, promising to elevate every dish.

Ingredients

Scale

1/4 cup neutral oil (canola, grapeseed, or vegetable)
3 tablespoons finely minced fresh ginger
4 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
3 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
2-3 tablespoons chili oil (adjust to desired heat)
Optional: 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon cold water (for thickening)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare your ingredients by finely mincing the fresh ginger and garlic. Have all other measured ingredients ready for quick assembly.
Step 2: In a small, heat-safe mixing bowl, combine the minced garlic, minced ginger, red pepper flakes, and salt. Stir them together lightly.
Step 3: Heat the neutral oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Wait until the oil just begins to shimmer and a wisp of smoke appears, indicating it's hot enough.
Step 4: Carefully pour the hot oil over the mixture of garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and salt in the bowl. It will sizzle and fragrant steam will rise. This step cooks the aromatics and extracts their intense flavors.
Step 5: Allow the oil and aromatic mixture to cool for about 1-2 minutes. Then, add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), toasted sesame oil, and chili oil to the bowl. Whisk all the ingredients together thoroughly until they are well combined and the honey has fully dissolved.
Step 6: Taste the dragon sauce and adjust the seasonings according to your preference. You might want to add more honey for sweetness, more rice vinegar for tang, or an extra splash of soy sauce for deeper umami. This is your chance to customize your perfect dragon sauce recipe.
Step 7: If you prefer a slightly thicker sauce, create a cornstarch slurry by mixing 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Add this slurry to the sauce in a small saucepan and heat gently over low heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. This step is optional.
Step 8: Transfer the finished dragon sauce to an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. Shake well before each use.

Notes

For best results, use fresh ginger and garlic. The quality of your chili oil will significantly impact the flavor. This sauce is fantastic served immediately but tastes even better after a few hours in the fridge as the flavors meld.
