Description

Master the art of the perfect Mint Julep with this authentic recipe. A refreshing blend of fresh mint, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice, this classic Southern cocktail is ideal for Derby Day or any warm afternoon.

Ingredients

Scale

8-10 fresh mint leaves, plus a large sprig for garnish
1/2 ounce simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water)
2 ounces good quality Kentucky bourbon (90-100 proof)
Finely crushed ice

Instructions

Step 1: In the bottom of a julep cup or a sturdy rocks glass, combine the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup.
Step 2: Gently muddle the mint leaves 3-4 times. You want to release their essential oils and aroma, not tear them apart or make them bitter.
Step 3: Add the bourbon to the cup. Swirl gently to combine the mint, syrup, and bourbon.
Step 4: Pack the cup tightly with finely crushed ice. The more crushed the ice, the better it will chill the drink and frost the cup.
Step 5: Using a long-handled spoon, stir the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. Continue stirring until the outside of the cup is thoroughly frosted.
Step 6: Top with more crushed ice, forming a dome over the top of the cup.
Step 7: Garnish with a generous fresh mint sprig. Gently slap the mint sprig against your hand before placing it in the ice to release its aroma.
Step 8: Serve immediately. For the best experience, hold the cup by the rim or bottom to maintain the frost.

Notes

Always use fresh mint! Over-muddling can make your drink bitter. The key is gentle pressure to release oils. Using a good quality bourbon makes all the difference in this simple yet elegant cocktail.
