Description
Discover the timeless elegance of the Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail with this easy-to-follow old fashioned recipe. Made with quality whiskey, a hint of sweetness, and aromatic bitters, it’s a perfect balance of tradition and taste.
Ingredients
1 sugar cube (or 1/4 oz / 7.5ml simple syrup)
2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters
1 tsp water (if using sugar cube)
2 oz (60ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
Large ice cube or sphere
1 orange peel, for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Place one sugar cube (or 1/4 oz simple syrup) into a heavy-bottomed rocks glass. If using a cube, add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto it, followed by a tiny splash of water (about a teaspoon). Gently muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved and creates a syrup.
Step 2: Pour 2 ounces of your chosen whiskey (bourbon or rye) into the glass.
Step 3: Add one large, dense ice cube or sphere to the glass.
Step 4: Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for about 30-60 seconds to properly dilute and chill the cocktail. The goal is to achieve a harmonious blend of flavors.
Step 5: Take an orange peel. Express the oils over the drink by gently twisting it, then rub the peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it into your finished Old Fashioned. Serve immediately.
Notes
For the best results, use a high-quality whiskey. Adjust sugar and bitters to your taste. A large, clear ice cube melts slower, ensuring a less diluted drink. Always express the orange oils for an enhanced aroma.
