Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons orange zest
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter (for frosting)
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon orange extract
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
Step 2: Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Step 3: Cream 1 cup butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
Step 4: Add eggs one at a time, followed by orange zest and vanilla.
Step 5: Alternate adding dry ingredients and liquid ingredients (buttermilk and juice) to the butter mixture.
Step 6: Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Step 7: Cool cakes completely on a wire rack before frosting.
Step 8: Beat cream cheese, frosting butter, powdered sugar, cream, and orange extract until smooth.
Step 9: Layer and frost the cake as desired.
