Description

This comforting apple crisp, inspired by The Pioneer Woman, features tender, spiced apples beneath a generous, buttery streusel topping, perfect for any cozy occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

6-8 medium apples (a mix of tart and sweet like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
½ cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
For the Streusel Topping:
1 ½ cups old-fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup packed light brown sugar
½ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 3: In another medium bowl, prepare the streusel topping. Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix with a fork until large crumbs form.
Step 4: Evenly sprinkle the streusel topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Step 5: Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and bubbly, and the topping is golden brown and crisp. If the topping browns too quickly, you can lightly tent it with aluminum foil.
Step 6: Remove from oven and let cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For extra crunch, add 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the streusel topping. A drizzle of warm caramel sauce before serving is also highly recommended!
