Step 2: Gradually add the warm water to the dry mixture, stirring with a sturdy spoon or spatula. If using food coloring, add it to the water before mixing.
Step 3: Continue mixing until a shaggy, somewhat crumbly dough forms. It will not be completely smooth at this stage.
Step 4: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface (a clean countertop or silicone mat works well). Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes. The dough should become smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky, resembling play-doh. Add a tiny bit more flour if too sticky, or a teaspoon of water if too dry.
Step 5: Once kneaded, roll out the salt dough to your desired thickness, typically between 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Use cookie cutters, knives, or your hands to shape your crafts. For ornaments, use a straw or skewer to create a hole at the top for hanging.
Step 6: Carefully transfer your shaped salt dough creations to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Ensure they are not touching.
Step 7: Preheat your oven to its lowest setting, typically around 175-200°F (80-95°C). Bake the salt dough crafts for 2-3 hours, or until they are completely hard and dry. Thicker pieces may take longer. Flip the items every hour or so to ensure even drying. Alternatively, air dry for 2-5 days, turning daily, until fully hardened.
Step 8: Once completely dry, remove from the oven (or air-drying rack) and let them cool completely. They should feel very lightweight and solid.
Step 9: Decorate your cooled crafts using acrylic paints, markers, glitter, or other embellishments. Allow the paint to dry fully.
Step 10: To protect your finished creations and ensure longevity, seal them with a clear sealant such as Mod Podge, varnish, or clear nail polish. Apply according to product instructions and allow to dry completely before handling or displaying.
