Description
A comforting and flavorful Southern-style wilted lettuce recipe, featuring crisp greens gently softened by a warm, tangy, and savory hot bacon dressing. A nostalgic side dish that's quick to prepare and incredibly satisfying.
Ingredients
8 cups fresh lettuce (romaine, butter, or red leaf), washed and dried, torn into bite-sized pieces
6 slices thick-cut bacon
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 cup water or chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Wash and thoroughly dry the lettuce. Tear it into bite-sized pieces and place in a large, heatproof serving bowl.
Step 2: In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain, reserving the rendered fat in the skillet.
Step 3: Reduce the heat to low. To the bacon fat in the skillet, add the apple cider vinegar, granulated sugar, and water (or broth). Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is simmering gently.
Step 4: Immediately pour the hot dressing over the prepared lettuce in the serving bowl. Toss gently but quickly to coat all the lettuce leaves, allowing them to wilt slightly.
Step 5: Crumble the cooked bacon over the wilted lettuce. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
For the best results, use fresh, crisp lettuce that is completely dry. Adjust the sugar and vinegar to your personal preference for the dressing. Serve immediately for optimal texture and warmth.
